How to give your baby a relaxing and calming massage:

Facial Enhancement Picture
Start at baby's best time of day (often early or mid morning). Keep the room warm and strip her right off, lay her on her back and rub the oil between your hands to make it nice and warm (and make sure your hands are warm)

You need to use firm strokes (don't be afraid of hurting her). Start from the bottom of her torso using both hands rub up to her chest, out along the inside of her arms, back along the outside of her arms, back down her chest, down the outside of her legs, up the inside of her legs and start over again.

There are specific massages for babies with specific problems (ie colic, colds, coughs, reflux, digestive problems, fretfulness etc) which you can learn if you want.

Its one long slow fluid movement really. Don't worry if she frets a little (or even a lot) she'll probably settle more as you get into it. Sometimes it takes babies 2- 3 times of being massaged to get used to the sensations. Also if they are under 6 weeks they sometimes really dislike having their clothes taken off.

Try doing that movement 5 - 10 times slowly. Then you can massage individual parts. Always use long slow strokes, always go up the inside of the leg and down the outside (vice versa for arms). Once you've done her front, flip her over and start on her back with exactly the same pattern.

Most babies squawk and squeal at being on their tummies at first - especially when they can't hold their heads up, but if you do it every time, you'll be surprised how quickly they get used to it. You may have to make the back massage shorter the first few times if they really get upset but don't miss it out as its an important part and they get to love it eventually. Its also good for developing head control and neck muscles.

The whole process should take 30mins - hour. Once baby is used to being massaged everyday, you should find them getting a bit calmer all day especially in the evenings.

When she's much calmer you can swap the massage to evening time if it suits. Lots of people I know do massage, bath, milk, bed, or just massage, milk, bed, whatever suits you really.
