The British Medical Journal has published results of a recent systematic review of 7 trials, involving 1,336 women undergoing IVF. The review suggests that when acupuncture is given in conjunction with embryo transfer,
it increases the chance of women becoming pregnant by 65%, in comparison to sham acupuncture or no additional treatment.

What this means is that 10 women would need to be treated with acupuncture to bring about one additional pregnancy for IVF
patients.

Effects of acupuncture on rates of pregnancy
Current preliminary evidence suggests that acupuncture given with embryo transfer improves rates of pregnancy and live birth among women undergoing in vitro fertilisation.
Western medicine is now seriously researching acupuncture in the area of infertility. Research which meets the highest double blind testing scrutiny is finding strong evidence to prove acupuncture is an effective support tool
increasing fertility in previously infertile couples.
Acupuncture is used to treat many conditions associated with infertility such as
blocked fallopian tubes or
low sperm count. Whilst Western medicine has not put statistical proof to this branch of acupuncture I have had many successes in clinical practice. Acupuncture is no miracle cure but it can increase the rate of pregnancy.
There are also things that you can do to improve the situation yourself, lifestyle changes such as giving up smoking, eating healthily, exercising and avoiding stress will all help.
